Craps

Craps is one of the faster paced casino games that provides players with quite an adrenaline rush. If you’ve ever been to a live casino, you’ve surely seen and heard maniacs huddled around an oval table, throwing dice and yelling as they let ‘em fly. Well folks, what you saw was “craps”, and is actually one of the most popular live casino games as well as online casino games.

How to Play Craps

Craps is actually a fairly simple game when it comes down to it, but it seems confusing because of the many bets spread across the table. If you’re a new player and stick to the simple bets, you can learn everything you need to know about craps right on this page.

The first thing you need to know about is the come out roll. This is the initial roll of the dice that establishes the “pass-line point”. If the come out roll is a 7 or 11, then any players who bet on the pass line win their bets, and a new game starts (in the craps world, this is called a “natural”). If the come out roll is a 2, 3, or 12, then it is “craps”, and any players who bet on the pass line automatically lose their bets. If any number besides a 2, 3, 7, 11, or 12 is rolled, then that number becomes the pass-line point.

Once you establish the pass-line point, the shooter will roll the dice again and again until he/she either rolls the pass-line point, or rolls a 7, which ends the game. If the shooter rolls the pass-line point before rolling a seven, then all pass line bets will win. However, if they shooter “sevens out” by rolling a seven before the pass-line point, then any bets placed on the pass-line are losers.

Besides just the pass-line bet, there are tons of other bets laid across a craps table. This section was just meant to introduce players to the game of craps, so we’re going to write additional articles in the near future to cover craps bets, craps odds, and dice control.

New Craps Players

If you’re new to the game of craps, there are a few pointers you should follow to help you get started. First of all, when you’re starting out you should stick to the most basic bets possible, because if you try to make advanced bets you’re likely to get confused and possibly bet on something you don’t even understand. I’d recommend sticking with the pass-line bet to start out until you get the hang of things.

Also, I’d like to mention a point or two about craps etiquette. If you play online, this won’t matter, because the casino software won’t let you make an incorrect bet. However, when you’re playing live, you should follow the rules below:

Timing Your Buy-in

One thing that can really agitate players at the table is if you buy your chips at an inappropriate time. There are a few times that you shouldn’t buy chips, such as when the shooter is about to roll, or when the shooter is in the middle of a long string of successful rolls. Nothing agitates a craps shooter as bad as a new player putting their money in the middle of the table, only to have the dice hit the money and seven out.

Keep the Pace Up

Lots of players like to make proposition bets at the craps tables, which is when you place a bet guessing a specific number for the next roll/series of rolls. Proposition bets can be a lot of fun, especially when you win one (they pay out a pretty high percentage), but they really slow the game down. If you have to make a proposition bet, I’d suggest making them only on occasion, and not when the shooter is in the middle of a great string of rolls.
